ADOPT-A-LIGHT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

The Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission (TLAC) is calling for assistance in supporting the maintenance of the lighted channel markers on Smith Mountain Lake.  Through the Adopt-a-Light Program, channel marker lights are monitored by volunteers who report light outages to TLAC.  Our valued volunteers notify TLAC, which assists us to initiate prompt maintenance by alerting Appalachian Power Company.  APCO repairs navigation markers for which they are responsible.

The channel markers lights in need of adoption include:

  •             Blackwater River:    B-6, B-8, B-8A, B-9, B-26A, B-29, B-30A, B-31A, B-32, B-43, B-45
  •             Beaverdam Creek:  BE-5
  •             Gills Creek:                G-7, G-9, G-10
  •             Roanoke River:         R-1, R-12, R-17, R-24, R-25, R-30, R-33, R-53, R-61, R-65A,                                                                     R-68, R-70, R-73, R-74, R-78, R-79, R-80, R-81, R-83, R-85, R-87

If you are interested in adopting any of the markers noted above, please contact Chris Koefer at the TLAC office, 721-4400, or e-mail navigation@sml.us.com.  We encourage anyone traveling on the Lake after dark, who notices that a light has malfunctioned, to please take note of the channel marker number and call our office to report the outage.

We truly appreciate everyone who has participated in this Program over the years, and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our current "adopters".  Without a doubt, your assistance helps keep Smith Mountain Lake a safe place for boaters.

ADOPT-A-BUOY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

The Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission (TLAC) announces an "Adopt-a-Buoy" program for the 57 shoal and rock buoys on Smith Mountain Lake. Adopt-a-Buoy volunteers are asked to monitor a shoal or rock buoy which they can see from their home, and notify TLAC if it is missing or has been damaged.  Interested residents are invited to call TLAC at 721-4400 to register as the official adopter.

The responsibility for most of the navigation markers became Appalachian Power Company’s on April 1, 2010.  In an effort to assist all who enjoy the lake and because of the priority of safety, TLAC has determined it is in the public’s best interest to continue its role of handling the outage and malfunction reports and to enhance the current Adopt-a-Light program.  TLAC will forward reports of malfunctions to APCO immediately.

All residents noting a navigation marker in need of atttention should call TLAC at (540) 721-4400.  TLAC is pleased to continue to offer this service to the community and appreciates the help of residents with this continued effort to keep Smith Mountain Lake safe.
