Smith Mountain Lake Dam 

November 1962 - Construction completed on the Smith Mountain Lake Dam

  • Maximum height of 235 feet above the streambed
  • 816 feet long
  • 30 feet thick

 

September 24, 1963 - The process of filling Smith Mountain Lake began

                                         On March 7, 1966 the Lake was at full pond (795 feet)

  • 500 miles of  waterfront shoreline
  • The reservoir behind the dam has a surface area of 20,260 acres at the normal operating pool
  • 40 miles long
  • Smith Mountain Lake is the largest lake solely in Virginia.

Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission

1986 - The Smith Mountain Lake Policy Advisory Board was established, which is known today

as the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission.

The mission of the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission is to assist in the development of a harmonious community at the Lake, throught the administration of those programs and projects delegated to it by the Boards of Supervisors of the three localities surrounding the Lake, and to study and advise the three Boards of Supervisors on issues related to the overall well being of the Lake, as directed by the member counties.  It is the mission of the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission to do for the three counties, in a more efficient and effective manner, what any one of the member counties could do for themselves individually, and to perform such duties and to exercise such appropriate powers and authority as may be delegated by the Boards of Supervisors of the member counties to the "TLAC" and not exceeding the limits of delegation as prescribed under the Code of Virginia.

The current number of navigation markers on Smith Mountain Lake:

  • 153 channel markers.
  • 6 lighted shoal markers.
  • 57 unlighted shoal markers and rock markers
  • 18 AC lights on Halesford Bridge
  • 302 signs identifying the markers
